LG plans global innovations from India

Excerpted from an interview of Moon Bum Shin, managing director of LG Electronics India, with the Economic Times, Mumbai, April 5, 2010, "We’ll spend $5 m on marketing: LG India", p. 4.

Q. Where does India figure in your global scheme of things?

A. We will make India the export hub for LG. This market will lead our global innovation and new development, and supply the new platform of green and environment-friendly products globally. We have chosen India to lead because the labour market here is rich with talent. There are scores of qualified engineers, best in class universities, and most importantly, a big base of Englishspeaking population. We are betting on this vast consumer base- the youngistaan of India. We have set up a learning, design and R&D centre in the Greater Noida headquarters. We will take these to big, separate locations within five years. This year, we plan to invest Rs 400 crore in R&D and Rs 700 crore in marketing. Our aim is to have 40% share in each category that we operate in within five years.

"Isro gears up to launch GSLV-D3 powered by indigenous engine"

Excerpted from: The Economic Times, April 3, 2010, p. 8

ISRO is preparing to launch a geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-D3), powered for the first time by a home-made cryogenic engine, from Sriharikota spaceport this month, its chief K Radhakrishnan said on Tuesday.  [...]
He said the indigenous development of complex cryogenic rocket technology after years of effort is a reply to technology denial regimes. In terms of technology development it has been a “marvellous thing”, he said.
“In 1992, we wanted to get this technology from Russia, and the Americans put a sanction on Russia not to transfer this technology and India took a bold decision to develop it. So, we have done it,” he said.
Update from 17.04.2010

The launch (on 15.04.2010) has failed. See the following report:

The non-ignition of the cryogenic engine on board the Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D3) led to the failure of the mission on Thursday (April 15), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has more or less concluded. “The cryogenic engine has not ignited, that is for sure. Why it has not ignited, the reasons have to be found out,” said S. Satish, ISRO spokesman, on Friday.

Multinational R&D centers in India foster innovation, reports a study

New Delhi, March 31, 2010: Zinnov Management Consulting said the presence of multinational R&D centers in India has been a positive influence on the local industry ecosystem in India, particularly while fostering innovation, academic partnerships, entrepreneurial zeal and reversing brain drain.

In its report on MNC research and development (R&D) centers in India titled, 'Impact of MNC R&D Centers in India', Zinnov said MNC R&D centers here have begun to understand and capitalize on ideas and talent from India, which has resulted in increased innovation in the last few years.

The report said the R&D factory in India is still very nascent when compared with other Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Israel predominantly because their local R&D ecosystem was always very conducive for MNC companies to enter and extract value in an accelerated fashion. India's existing R&D ecosystem has been built by these MNC R&D companies and it still remains a key charter for them to mature this ecosystem into an assembly line for innovation.
